The History of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

SOUTHWEST SUNSHINE

Most people are aware that we are in the middle of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual health campaign is an international event that is organized by the major breast cancer charities all over the world to raise much needed funds for research and of course, awareness. It also reminds women to be more, “Breast Cancer Aware.”

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, or NBCAM, has become such a major event that even the NFL is involved with its players wearing pink every Sunday in October when they play football. So large is the event that last year saw the Eiffel Tower and Niagara Falls showing off pink lights at night.

The American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries founded national Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is the maker of several breast cancer drugs in 1985. The partnership was aimed at promoting mammography as the world’s most effective weapon against the devastating disease.

The pink ribbon, the symbol of the NBCAM, started in 1991 when the Susan G. Komen Foundation gave participants of the New York City race for breast cancer survivors pink ribbons in 1991. The ribbon was borrowed from the extremely popular red ribbon for AIDS awareness.

In 1993, the editor in chief, Alexandra Penney, of the magazine Self, a women’s health periodical, and breast cancer survivor, Evelyn Lauder, vice president of Estee Lauder, founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation establishing the pink ribbon as the symbol of the new charity organization. The pink ribbon was distributed at stores in New York City, thanks to the Estee Lauder brand.

Although NBCAM is associated with the Race for the Cure, the first race was actually held in Dallas, Texas in 1983 with 800 participants. By 2002, the Race for the Cure was being held in more than 100 cities with participants reaching over 1.3 million. By 2010, the Race for the Cure had expanded to more than 50 countries around the globe.

All over the planet, people come up with inventive ways of celebrating National Breast Cancer Awareness month including SOUTHWEST SUNSHINE.
